Claire Piper Artist

Claire is an artist, designer and illustrator with a background in textiles and ceramics, now working across a range of mediums.
After more than twenty years in the voluntary sector, including leading an arts charity and a SEND youth voice project, Claire has stepped away from that work to focus fully on her creative practice.
Claire’s work is shaped by lived experience and a curiosity about the world around her. She explores nature, sea life, human forms and abstraction with a sense of freedom and openness, allowing each piece to evolve through experimentation and play.
There is a strong interest in how materials can hold feeling, movement and memory. The work is expressive and assured, informed by lived experience and recent life changes. It provides both direction and a continuing sense of possibility.

Art Vision
Claire works across mixed media, print and textiles, using materials in a hands-on, experimental way. Her practice moves fluidly across mediums, styles and forms, allowing ideas to develop without constraint.
The work emerges from close attention to everyday life—observing people, nature, places, politics and the systems we move through. As a result, it can be playful, reflective, or offer a quiet social commentary.
An experimental approach to materials underpins the practice, with layered paint and mixed media used to build depth, texture and intensity. Colour and shape are employed with clarity and intent to explore connection and contrast.
A foundation in 3D textiles and ceramics continues to inform how Claire thinks through making. She creates natural dyes and inks, prints and dyes fabrics, and works with cyanotype processes.
In the studio, Claire develops her own printmaking methods, including gelatine plate printing, carving into rubber and other soft materials, salt-dough printing, and using discarded food packaging to produce collagraphs and monoprints.
