What is Gelli Printing?
Gelli printing is a hands-on, expressive way to make art that blends spontaneity with texture-rich results. It’s a form of monoprinting that doesn’t require a printing press, carving tools or even much planning. Using a reusable Gelli plate, artists can create beautifully layered prints filled with colour, pattern and personality.
This style of printmaking is loved for its low-pressure, high-reward feel. There’s no need to be “good at art.” Just turn up, get stuck in, and see where it takes you.
What is a Gelli Plate?
A Gelli plate is a flexible slab made from a synthetic gel-like material. It’s soft, durable and non-toxic. When touched, it feels similar to gelatin but is designed for repeated use. The surface is smooth but slightly tacky, which makes it perfect for holding and transferring paint.
Unlike traditional printing blocks or etched plates, a Gelli plate doesn’t need pressure to make a print. Just apply paint, add texture, press your paper (or fabric) on top and lift. That’s it.
How to Use a Gelli Plate
To get started with Gelli plate printing, you only need a few simple materials:
-A Gelli plate
- Acrylic paint
- A brayer (roller)
- Paper or fabric
- Found objects or stencils for texture
Roll out a thin layer of paint across the plate using the brayer. Then press in natural or textured objects like leaves, lace, stamps or string. Gently lay your paper on top and press evenly. When you lift the paper, your unique monoprint is revealed.
You can layer colours and textures to build depth or take ghost prints using the leftover paint on the plate. Each print is one of a kind.
Why We Love Gelli Printing
Gelli printing suits artists, crafters and curious beginners alike. Whether you make journals, greeting cards, textile art or just want a break from screen time, this method encourages you to play without expectations.
There’s a satisfying immediacy to it. Mistakes become part of the story. No two prints are the same. And with minimal setup, it’s easy to dip in and out whenever inspiration hits.
It’s also incredibly accessible. No studio, no formal training. Just colour, texture and your own two hands.
